Barbara Ehrenreich, Explorer of Prosperity's Dark Side, Dies at 81
It was a casual meeting.
Over salmon and field greens, Barbara Ehrenreich was discussing future articles with her editor at Harpers Magazine. Then, as she recalled, the conversation drifted.
How could anyone survive on minimum wage? She mused. A tenacious journalist should find out.
Her editor, Lewis Lapham, offered a half smile and a single word reply: You.
The result was the book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America (2001), an undercover account of the indignities, miseries and toil of being a low-wage worker in the United States. It became a best seller and a classic in social justice literature.

White House Correspondent the Most Recent High-Profile Departure at CNN
Source: The Daily Beast
The staff shakeups at CNN under new management and ownership continue. White House correspondent John Harwood announced Friday that todays my last day at CNN, tweeting that he looks forward to figuring out whats next.
Harwood came to the network in Jan. 2020 after spending 13 years at CNBC as a Washington correspondent, where he broke the news in 2008 that John McCain had picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. In 2015, he made a name for himself as a harsh Donald Trump critic after clashing with the then-candidate in a GOP primary debatea reputation that continued at CNN.
His departure comes shortly after the networks chief media correspondent Brian Stelterlong an antagonist of right-wing mediawas terminated and his show canned.
Harwood appeared three times on CNN Friday morning, and apparently knowing that this was his last day, took the opportunity to deliver a parting message about the challenges facing journalismand CNN itselfwhen covering the current state of politics.

The nation's poorest state used welfare money to pay Brett Favre for speeches he never made
Source: NBC News
The state auditor says $70 million in federal welfare funds went to Favre, a volleyball complex and a former pro wrestler in a scandal that has rocked Mississippi.
Brett Favre earned nearly $140 million as a star NFL quarterback over two decades and millions more in product endorsements.
But that didnt stop the state of Mississippi from paying Favre $1.1 million in 2017 and 2018 to make motivational speeches out of federal welfare funds intended for needy families. The Mississippi state auditor said Favre never gave the speeches and demanded the money back, with interest.
Favre has repaid the fees, although not the $228,000 in interest the auditor also demanded. But the revelation by the auditor that $70 million in TANF welfare funds was doled out to a multimillionaire athlete, a professional wrestler, a horse farm and a volleyball complex are at the heart of a scandal that has rocked the nations poorest state, sparking parallel state and federal criminal investigations that have led to charges and guilty pleas involving some of the key players.
Favre hasnt been accused of a crime or charged, and he declined an interview. His lawyer, Bud Holmes, said he did nothing wrong and never understood he was paid with money intended to help poor children. Holmes acknowledged that the FBI had questioned Favre in the case, a fact that hasnt previously been reported.
