Massive Asteroid Flew By Earth Before Scientists Even Saw It

Some days, scientists find asteroids months before they're expected to pass by our planet. Other days, those same crews may not notice a warehouse-sized asteroid zoomed by Earth until...well, it already zoomed by. That's the case recently with an asteroid officials are now calling 2021 SG, a space-faring rock that passed by the planet on September 16th — only scientists weren't able to see it because it came from the direction of the sun.

According to data released by the NASA-backed Minor Planet Center, 2021 SG has a diameter of anywhere between 42 meters and 94 meters. For non-scientists, that's roughly 138 feet to 308 feet. In comparison, it's about the size of Cinderella's Castle at Walt Disney World so, yeah, a hefty chunk of rock.

EarthSky suggests the asteroid passed by the planet at a distance comparable to half the distance from this planet to the moon. NASA considers anything passing by the planet within 121 million miles a "Near-Earth Object," meaning 2021 SG most certainly meets the qualifications. A similar asteroid broke up over Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013 and sent shockwaves through six cities in the area. Around 1,500 Russians had to seek medical attention after the event, largely as a result of broken glass and flying debris.

Tooele woman searching for answers after Navajo aunt mysteriously disappears

Hand-woven rugs in Seraphine Warren's Tooele home depict gray mountains and the red mesas of Monument Valley. The farm scenes feature grazing cows and sheep, alongside people and covered wagons.

The phrase, "Bless our Home," graces the bottom of each tapestry.

Warren's aunt, Ella Mae Begay, created the rich textiles. Begay made her living as a professional weaver, selling her creations in Arizona.

"She was very talented as far as actually putting action into her rugs," Warren said, as both small rugs sat in her lap.

The niece now holds on to those woven squares, to remind her of Begay.

"It’s just getting harder to have any more hope that she’s still alive," Warren said. Begay, Warren explained, disappeared from her Sweetwater, Arizona home in the middle of the night between June 14 and 15.

Warren described how it was completely uncharacteristic for the 62-year old, who mostly stayed home during the pandemic. Begay didn't let people inside her house because of COVID-19, Warren said.

Tough-on-Crime Republican DA Charged With Ambushing, Raping Woman

A Republican district attorney in Pennsylvania who styled himself as a tough-on-crime prosecutor—while refusing to pursue charges against anyone cited for disregarding state mask mandates—now stands accused of violently raping a female acquaintance in her own home, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Somerset County DA Jeffrey Lynn Thomas, 36, allegedly attacked the unidentified woman on Sept. 18, having first contacted her on Snapchat to say he’d be coming over in a few minutes, according to police. A criminal complaint obtained by the Somerset County, Pennsylvania Tribune-Democrat states that the woman knew Thomas in a professional capacity and that she had for years rebuffed his persistent sexual advances.

Thomas sent the Snapchat message at around 11 p.m. last Saturday, the complaint explains. She replied that he was not welcome there, and to please stay away. Soon after, Thomas walked into the woman’s home with an armload of beer cans and handed her one, according to cops.

The woman asked Thomas to leave, but he reportedly refused and became “agitated.” After she slapped him, Thomas hit her in the face and gave her a nosebleed, the complaint states.

As Petito case captivates U.S., missing Native women ignored

In Wyoming, the state where Petito's body was found, only 18% of indigenous female homicide victims get newspaper coverage, compared with 51% for white female and male victims, according to a state report.

Between 2011 and September 2020, more than 400 indigenous women and girls were reported missing in Wyoming, according to the report.

Homicide is the third-leading cause of death among Native women who are murdered at rates more than 10 times the national average, according to federal data.

Media coverage of homicides of indigenous people was more likely to use violent language and portray the victim in negative light, according to the Wyoming report. Commentators have noted that coverage of missing Black, Hispanic and other women who are not white is similarly sparse and loaded.

Investigations into violence against Native peoples have been underfunded for decades, with murders and missing persons cases often unsolved and unaddressed, according to U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to hold the position. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, which runs law enforcement on Indian lands, is part of Interior.
