Uvalde survivors face bureaucracy and confusion as they struggle to stay afloat financially

Before May 24, the smile of Jessica Treviño’s 11-year-old daughter was contagious.

“She was always laughing,” Treviño said. “She would always come up to me, hug me, kiss me and just want to be next to me. Now? I don't know my daughter any more.”

That drastically changed the day of the shooting at Robb Elementary School, which left 19 students and two teachers dead.

Treviño’s daughter is one of the school’s nearly 600 students still reeling in the massacre’s aftermath. While the 11-year-old wasn't physically injured, since the shooting, stress has dominated the little girl's thoughts.

“We have a soccer game this Saturday, and the first thing she asked me — ‘What if they shoot it up? What if I lose my brothers and sisters?’” Treviño said. “How do I respond to that?”

Houston doctor suspended for vaccine misinformation files $25 million defamation lawsuit against

Houston doctor suspended for vaccine misinformation files $25 million defamation lawsuit against Methodist Hospital

A Houston doctor who previously sued Methodist Hospital after she was suspended for spreading COVID-19 misinformation has filed a second lawsuit against the hospital.

The newly filed lawsuit accuses Methodist and Methodist CEO Marc Boom of severely damaging the reputation of Dr. Mary Bowden — an ear, nose, and throat doctor in River Oaks who had her provisional privileges taken away last year after making claims online related to vaccine efficacy.

"Methodist and Boom retaliated against Dr. Bowden in an unprecedented manner. Without notice, they published false and defamatory statements to the press and on social media, affording no due process, acting contrary to and with reckless disregard for both the letter and spirit of Methodist's bylaws," the lawsuit reads.

The $25-million defamation lawsuit was filed in Harris County District Court Monday morning. During a press conference Monday, Bowden said Methodist’s decision to publicly oust her has forever changed her life.

“I want to clear my name and hold them accountable. Every person has a right to an unimpaired reputation,” Bowden said. “Thanks to Methodist, half the world thinks that I’m crazy and dangerous.”

Half of the world is correct thinking that Dr. Bowden is crazy and dangerous. Dr. Bowden shouldn't be practicing medicine.

Houston and Harris County plan to sue Union Pacific over 5th Ward pollution

Houston and Harris County leaders said they're suing Union Pacific Railroad for what they say is the company's role in creosote contamination in the Fifth Ward.

The announcement of the lawsuit, which was not yet filed as of Wednesday evening, comes about two weeks after testing found traces of a toxic chemical in the soil near a Union Pacific railyard.

Officials say they foresee a quicker resolution with the threat of a lawsuit under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, a federal law enacted in 1976 that regulates hazardous waste disposal.

“If UP will not make truly meaningful changes to address the pollution with our lawsuits by the city, county and the community, then we will seek justice at the courthouse,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said.

Houston region to receive more monkeypox vaccine doses as case numbers climb

More doses of the monkeypox vaccine are on their way to the Houston region as case numbers continue to climb.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced Thursday night on Twitter that 16,780 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine, which is FDA-approved and prevents monkeypox, had been allocated to the Houston region by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Earlier in the week, Hidalgo and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner wrote a joint letter to the CDC asking for more vaccines, and both the Houston Health Department and Harris County Public Health stopped scheduling vaccine appointments because of a supply shortage.

Hidalgo wrote on Twitter that the first of three vaccine shipments was scheduled to arrive Friday. But Porfirio Villarreal, a spokesperson for the Houston Health Department, said Friday morning that it likely would be several days before the additional doses are received.

Whitt, Proud Boys attack another drag brunch

Another drag brunch in The Colony is being targeted by right-wingers. Organizers of The Cantina Dolls Drag Brunch set for noon on Saturday, Aug. 6, at Lava Cantina, 5805 Grandscape in The Colony, said they have received “hundreds of insults and threats” and have even been contacted by the FBI who warned that The Proud Boys are planning on protesting the event next weekend.

One organizer said that Kevin Whitt, a Dallas hair dresser and failed drag queen who has since “converted” to Christianity and spends his time protesting LGBTQ events and issues, “has made it his mission to call us groomers/pedophiles/etc. to every news outlet that will speak to him,” prompting the flood of insults and threats.”

The event had first been advertised as open to all ages but with an advisory warning of “adult themes.” But since the threats started pouring in, it has changed to an 18-and-over event in hopes of getting the attacks to ease up. The change has not helped though, organizers said.

Whitt, a former staff field organizer with the Republican Party of Texas was fired by the Texas GOP last year after posting to Facebook a video of himself on the steps of the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection along with video of himself arguing with an employee of a Washington, D.C., pizzeria over the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory.

Wagner Group in eastern Ukraine: A 'sign' that Russian forces are 'not doing the job' - FRANCE 24

Britain's defense ministry said that private Russian military firm Wagner Group has headed to eastern Ukraine, where "they are expected to deploy more than 1,000 mercenaries, including senior leaders of the organization, to undertake combat operations" following Russian setbacks. Reputed to be close to Vladimir Putin, the Wagner Group and its mercenaries are suspected of widespread abuses in Mali, Libya and Syria. As Russia's invasion of Ukraine now enters a potentially more volatile chapter, FRANCE 24 is joined by Dr. Samuel Ramani, geopolitical analyst and associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute. Ramani says he's "not expecting much success" with this latest maneuver from Russia.

"Wagner Group forces have traditionally been much more effective" in a "defensive capacity", providing training for Libyan forces or "guardianship of stationary facilities". But Russia's war on Ukraine is a purely offensive military operation and Wagner Group has had only very limited success with such operations in countries such as Libya, Mozambique and Central African Republic. And how might the West respond to these latest developments? Ramani says the West will simply regard it as an escalation of the war and see this as "a sign that Russia is not really serious about peace". Otherwise, "they wouldn't be bringing 1,000 fighters who are known for egregious human rights abuses ranging from the deployment of land mines to the use of chemical weapons in Libya", he explains.

"That's not really the step that you'd be taking if you want to actually end this war."
