the government, and so on according to their personal bents. Virtually all are motivated only only noble ideals and causes.

Somehow I doubt this needless self destruction by a mature man is unrelated to the mass self destruction we're seeing all over -- most of it on the right, but also some personality types across the spectrum who are less tethered to reality than average.
