it was a tough time.

But after she defected (running away from the airport motel with her sister - ages 16 and 17) the night before her flight back to Afghanistan, we adults wordlessly let them go. We did not call law enforcement. We didn't discuss it but we were all clearly thinking the same thing. In retrospect, recklessly risky for the girls!

It was a State Dept. program with strict rules. They shut it down the next year - too many defections!
