I had open heart surgery (aortic valve replacement) four years ago. Between my husband's work insurance and Medicare, it cost me...
Zero, zip, nada. Not one thin dime. I was and am astounded.
I don't really feel guilty about my good fortune. I just feel lousy that it can't be that way for everybody. It isn't right that I got such an amazing break while so many other people have to do without health care that they need as much or more than I needed that surgery. That's massively fucked up.
