(14,492 posts)I feel our community members are far too isolated from the workings of our police forces even though they are an absolute necessity for a civil society.
Some other things that should help:
1. Police recruiters should avoid gung-ho and gun-nut type personalities, as those are almost certain to come with prejudicial baggage, and recruits with hints of psychopathic personality profiles should be avoided at all cost.
2. Those so-called "internal incident investigations" should have mandatory civilian participation on the investigative boards and have mandatory periodic public reporting required.
3. Police need better weapons for disabling violent suspects other than by using lethal force.
4. Our police forces need effective PR campaigns to inform the public of the thousands of good things they do every day, whereas we typically only see the bad events.
On the other side of the fence, our general public needs better ways to connect in a community environment with our police, such a community meet-and-greet gatherings. Cops exist in their bubble and we in ours and that must end.
After all, cops are of us, they come from us, and they ARE us just as are all government employees.
