What is going on with this "collective" of friends using the publicity surrounding his death to grasp for money for themselves so they can take time off from work?

Sorry. Weird. Just kind of a shitty look in general. They're trading on their friend's murder to grub for money for themselves. It's really gross to me.

I've experienced all kinds of loss in my life. Deaths, murder, multiple suicides. It never crossed my mind to run to GoFundMe with palm out to the public for hard cash to help me process my grief.
