The NWS provides the data for the whole country to predict weather from. They no longer have the money to launch as many weather balloons to get the data everyone needs. So your weather people are guessing now more than before. If they had had more data they could have been more accurate and would have been likelier to know this was going to be catastrophic so they could warn people better.

NWS is a basic function of government that keeps us safe. They’ve been slashed to nothing. Expect more surprise events. People think that local weather stations have all this state of the art equipment when they don’t. A lot of states have gaps in Doppler Radar coverage even. The local weather people are relying on data from the NWS to make accurate predictions.
