Shawn McCreesh, White House reporter for the New York Times, explains how this plan backfired and why this case remains a part of the American imagination.

Shawn explained so much about this which made sense and how ultimately it is going to cost trump a big share of these supporters. That is because for years and years and years he preached that everyone going against him was because of the Epstein files and what was in them. "They" (people like Clinton, et al) were scared of trump because he alone was leading the charge to open these files.

Now he's totally dissing these followers and telling them to blow off. He doesn't even want them as supporters, he claims.

Shawn explained that when you've heard this over and over and over again, it becomes their main support for staying behind him, even when they become aware of his many blunders.

When people like trump devise these strategies (if you want to call lying a strategy), they never think them through. They never think of the pitfalls. It's whatever gets them through the moment.
