His language and tone seem pretty measured to me. This idea that the White House is somehow like a banquet hall (a place for hosting events) is really quite curious. Like who decided that? Maybe I watched too many episodes of the West Wing but I always thought it was the place where the president worked.

You started this dialogue with your father and it's kinda nice that he answered you. Why not just tell him what you think and why this hurts you personally. Why the deceit hurts us all. Saying the White House wouldn't be touched and then knocking the whole East Wing down. Putting in a ballroom/banquet hall by lying to the American people. It may or may not be our money paying for it but anyone in on the plan/construction will get our tax dollars in other ways. That's how these people operate.
