9. The truly backward drag on civilization is "uniquely American."

For a couple of centuries the United States was in the vanguard of advancing civilization. Then something scary happened: the most reactionary among us achieved a powerful voice, with no reasonable, thinking considered. Take "Creationism": If one believes in the biblical God, why assume he adheres to our own limited imagination? Wouldn't he be bored just zapping the universe into being? Why not amuse himself by playing around with Evolution? A lot more interesting, wouldn't even the strictest fundamentalist agree? The rest of the world has advanced way beyond the "fundie" Americans who currently are the loudest voices. Disregard of their views by the more intellectual seems to be increasingly a mistake.
