(8,665 posts)My father had about 1500 head on our farm. Most were Herefords. They can be rather gentle and easy going, but they are also jumpy and 'followers'. My father used to go into the bull pen to feed them and inevitably one of them would start pawing and lowering his head. Dad would just whack it on the snout with the bucket. It seemed as if he was unafraid of them, but it was my dad being smart. He could tell when they were being a threat or not. I have watched him haul ass out of the pen many times because the bucket did not work. (He did not carry it either. He would go back for it once the bulls had wandered away from that part of the pen.)
I was on good terms with two of the bulls so they would always come over to me and I could pet them and we would play 'push war'. For some reason, the bull always won...
