The fledgling 2014 race for governor heated up yesterday when the likely Democratic nominee requested an ethics investigation into whether Republican Gov. John Kasich or his privatized economic-development agency broke the law.

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald asked the Ohio Ethics Commission to determine whether board members of JobsOhio illegally benefited from financial incentives awarded by the private entity, which is underwritten by state liquor profits.

FitzGerald’s complaint was spurred by a Dayton Daily News report on Wednesday that six of nine members of the JobsOhio board have ties to companies that received tax credits or other assistance from the state or JobsOhio since Kasich took office in 2011.

The newspaper identified JobsOhio directors who were either employed by, on the board of or stockholders in the benefiting companies. They included such iconic Ohio-based companies as Bob Evans, Procter & Gamble, Sherwin-Williams and Marathon Oil.... MORE
