Fox News Anchor Fired for Giggling Every Time She Said "Fair & Balanced."

NEW YORK - Fox News Anchor Donna Fiducia was fired Friday for what Fox News called “inappropriate behavior while reading the news,” Underneath Hollywood learned. Ms. Fiducia couldn’t stop giggling every time she said Fox News was “Fair & Balanced.”

“Fox News is one long commercial for the Republican party,” Ms. Fiducia said. “Yet they kept insisting we say ‘Fair & Balanced.’ Every time I said it, I thought to myself, ‘Yeah, like we’re really fooling anybody.’”

Fox News said its actions were justified. “Millions of people are asked to tow the company line,” Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes said. “Somehow they can do it without giggling, which Ms. Fiducia could not handle.”

Mr. Ailes feels that Ms. Fiducia will eventually get her comeuppance. “Let’s see how much giggling she does while waitressing at TGI-Friday’s and singing cute little birthday songs to 80-year-old women, because she will never anchor the news again!”

Ms. Fiducia is glad to be gone and says Fox News is trying to cover up their conservatism by shoving their neutralism down people’s throats. “When a kid behaves badly and his or her parents enter the room the kid immediately says, ‘I didn’t do it!’ They say that because they did do it. Well, Fox News says they’re ‘Fair & Balanced’ because they’re unfair and partisan.”

snip

Ms. Fiducia has no plans for the future, though she hopes to avoid getting another job where lying on a regular basis is required.

6. Satire, but very close to the truth
<snip>
Mr. Ailes says the slogan is a proud affirmation of their unbiased viewpoint. “100% of our conservative audience understands what the slogan represents, which is comforting since 100% of our conservative audience represents 97% of our general audience… and the other 3% are inmates who are forced to watch Fox News as punishment from the evil warden.”

I once engaged in an email exchange with Ailes where I alleged that he was out of touch with the real world. He responded by emailing me his job history. I thought it was bizarre and rather pathetic that he went to such efforts to validate himself to a stranger sending him a critical email. I almost felt sorry for him.

Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 06:37 PM by Eric J in MN
It's a pardoy website:

http://www.underneathhollywood.com/twentythree.html

London – Pop diva Madonna added another member to her growing family after she was granted full custody of 44-year old Sudanese basketball star Manute Bol, Underneath Hollywood has learned. “Manute and Mommy are very happy and resting comfortably at home,” said Madonna spokesperson Clive Johns. Mr. Bol, a 7’7 center, played in the NBA from 1985-1995 for the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. His penchant for helping out his home country had left him in financial ruins and available for adoption.

37. right... it has a companion site called "Underneath Politics":
Democrats Warn President Bush Not to Appoint Judges who Have Ever Put Up Christmas Lights

Washington – Now that they’ve taken control of Congress, Democrats on Capital Hill warned President George W. Bush not to appoint Judges who have ever put up Christmas lights outside their home during the holiday season, Underneath Politics has learned. “Putting up Christmas lights indicates the potential judge most likely has some sort of religious belief, and people who believe in a higher power do not belong on the bench,” said Senator Harry Reid (D-NV). Most Democrats plan to use Christmas decorations as a litmus test in deciding who they will confirm for judgeships. “I can’t see myself supporting any judge who would put up Christmas lights knowing Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Atheist and Agnostic individuals might drive by their home,” said Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA). “It would undoubtedly cause those drivers to be offended, which could result in an eight car pile up due to icy conditions which often occur during winter months.” Full Story>>>

a new mantra for media legitimacy. I've noticed the sentiment popping up on public tv ads lately, since the big change-over at the top.
So from now on if a dem says something is black you must show a repub sayinf it is actually white, thus enforcing the "fair and balanced" doctrine? I find the whole business ridiculous.

Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 12:14 AM by Mother Jefferson
I'm a longtime lurker that enjoys this site and has not at all enjoyed Bush and his merry band of criminals (other than their constant supply of comic fodder). This thread inspired me to finally register and post. I post on more hostile forums, probably because I'm pretty good at dismantling the righties' arguments.

This thread is disturbing. I can't believe how many people made it past the third paragraph and still thought this story was real. I've spent much time ranting about how critical thought is becoming a lost art in America, and this thread is proof of it. Just like Bush supporters could be easily tricked into seeing things that were not there, the more progressive people on this forum are also easy pickings for a story that's patently absurd, yet pleasing to read. So pleasing, in fact, they many of you went completely blind.

Regard the blatant clues in the satirical article (and, for the few that still ain't got it yet, that article ain't real):

1) No source, no writer. Just a location. That's a big red flag, and the Repugs have used this technique to distribute fake news stories for many years. Don't be a patsy for stuff like that - sometimes the stakes will be a good deal higher than a Giggly Fiducia (sounds like some kind of intimate act). You're not even one word into the article yet, but should already be suspicious.

2) "Ms. Fiducia couldn’t stop giggling every time she said Fox News was “Fair & Balanced."

OK now people, that's an amusing thought. I know I'd split my sides like Harvey Korman on the old Carol Burnett show if I had to call Fox F&B on camera. It's just too absurd to spit out with a straight face. But, as we see, many are capable of pulling it off. In the real world, it's clear that statement does not make sense, i.e. it's not something one would reasonably expect to occur. When it does not make sense, it's probably not true.

3) “Fox News is one long commercial for the Republican party,” Ms. Fiducia said. “Yet they kept insisting we say ‘Fair & Balanced.’ Every time I said it, I thought to myself, ‘Yeah, like we’re really fooling anybody.’”

Sure, that's what we'd say, but we're not depending on reading the network news to pay our bills. This is totally unrealistic. If any plastic head deals with a separation from an employer like this, you can throw that career in the trash can unless it's Edward R. Murrow or something. No person employing even the slightest degree of critical thought should buy this one, and combined with the first two red flags, the credibility of the article should be in flames by now.

4) “Millions of people are asked to tow the company line,” Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes said. “Somehow they can do it without giggling, which Ms. Fiducia could not handle.”

"Asked to tow the company line"???? Think about it. How could anyone see this as something a news bureau chairman would announce publicly? Be afraid. Be very, very afraid.

5) Mr. Ailes feels that Ms. Fiducia will eventually get her comeuppance. “Let’s see how much giggling she does while waitressing at TGI-Friday’s and singing cute little birthday songs to 80-year-old women, because she will never anchor the news again!”

Oh, now REALLY, people. By now the odds of perceiving this as an authentic piece of news should be in the same state of shambles as Bush's presidency. TGI Fridays? 80 year old ladies? A newsroom chairman said that? No way.

And it actually keeps going, but I think I can stop with five blazing, in-your-face clues.

If we are going to play any role in making this nation strong, solvent, and honorable again, a whole bunch of us need some remedial work in critical thinking. If so many here couldn't ingest a small amount of obviously-false information without even bothering to contemplate it before beginning to taunt and gloat, it...well, at least partially explains how Americans are such easy pickings when someone wants to pull the wool over their eyes.

Always carefully think things through. It doesn't take long, and it can spare you the pain of resembling one of those chumps that hauls out the constitution to protest the user terms of this PRIVATE site because he didn't bother to really read either DU or the USC.

All that said, I enjoyed the article and really like this forum. It's pretty funny that many of the things that have come to pass in the last 6 years would have looked like satire before the fact. Bush has raised the satire pole several notches.

62. Welcome to DU!
It IS a great place, IMO. I'm glad I read the responses before I posted anything because I initially thought it was an actual article, albeit somewhat odd - possibly because *I* would probably giggle every time I had to say "fair and balanced", too if I were a Faux employee.

I would believe things today that I never would have believed before, because with these guys in office, facts are often stranger than fiction. You're quite right - the satire bar has been raised to a whole new level.

At any rate, I'm glad it took you from lurking to posting, and once again, welcome to DU! :hi:

64. Hiya
Thanks, Laura. I hope it was clear that I didn't want to maliciously insult anyone, but a couple of pokes is certainly called for. We have to be strong and effective in order to fight the continued hijacking of this land by sleazy lunatics, and if we can't think at higher levels, we're going to lose.

I'm not a Democrat. I don't belong to any party. But, rational consideration of the issues facing us tends to move my support to the positions endorsed by the Dems.

In fact, being too passionate about any one group leads people to blindly accept things they perceive to come from a safe source, and that's the exact phenomenon we've witnessed in this thread. Even after being told it's a satire, people are asking for clips of her giggling. One person even bought the Christmas lights story.

Let's get it together people. Your mind is perhaps the most impressive creation in the universe. Use it, and be ready to kick some butt. We're all gonna need it :)

81. Indeed
the comments continue below, which is a bit unbelievable. The thread IS a perfect example of blindly accepting things. Or, possibly, a lack of reading comprehension. I'm a little amazed myself.

I was apolitical most of my life, registered Independent, but on the rare occasions I bothered to vote, it was for Democrats. I enjoyed my ignorance and bliss, but unfortunately it couldn't continue when GW was in office. I'm now a registered Dem because they're our only viable option, and I wanted to be involved.

While I don't think posts on a messageboard like this are going to cause us to lose anything, I wouldn't want this to be the first thread a newcomer came across.

At any rate, I hope to see more of your thoughtful, intelligent posts - maybe on a topic where people actually read the responses!

how many freakin' replies are gonna say comments which show they think this is real, even the post before mine does it, even though there's a dozen comments saying it's satire!

sheesh... really, it was a great trick, but when I read "3% are prisoners forced to watch by an evil warden" I knew it was 100% gag, but very clever, and the unknown website got me thinking that way anyhow.

How anyone would think that it's real after reading it in it's entirity, and ignoring all these posts saying it's a joke, is beyond me.

71. What was that again, Roger?
Fox News said its actions were justified. “Millions of people are asked to tow the company line,” Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes said. “Somehow they can do it without giggling, which Ms. Fiducia could not handle.”

Faux News employs "millions of people"? Or was Roger referring to the millions of people who supposedly watch that crap that are being asked to toe the company line?

72. Satire, yes, but many CEOs think like this Ailes.
"It's OK to lie for your company" and other unethical job requirements are rampant in today's American corporations.

Sooner or later, the American people are going to have to find a way of dealing with this.

86. Oh my! Is that a Fiducia 'tell all' book coming? Ailes might regret his comments...
We need more "former" Fox News news employees to come forward and reveal the absolute Republican propaganda that is pumped each and every day.

Nothing less will damage the credibility of one of the greatest news impostors of this century.

I think the comment "... she hopes to avoid getting another job where lying on a regular basis is required" kind of sums up the whole affair nicely.

I am betting that Fiducia could shed some light on Roger Ailes fixation on stories that have to do with animal/man relationships.

who this lady was. I'm also totally unfamiliar with that "underneath hollywood" website.

I've seen the movie "Out Foxed" which had many ex-Fox reporters / talking heads discussing the B.S. that goes on inside Fox News. You know, people that have been fired and/or quit...

I gotta say, this article sounds perfectly in line with true stories of other reporters, so I just took this story at face value.

I wouldn't say that makes me "too stupid to recognize satire", it just shows how very cynical I am about Fox News and Rupert Murdoch based on prior knowledge. I'm not sure what part of this "satire" sounds implausible, do you?
