Sacramento cops give up raises to save 70 jobs

Nearly 70 police jobs in the city of Sacramento likely have been saved after the police union and city officials reached a tentative agreement early this morning on a series of salary concessions aimed at solving a historic budget gap, The Bee has learned.

Police salary concessions -- forgoing a 5 percent cost-of-living increase and other raises associated with tenure -- will carve more than $6 million from the city's $50 million deficit for the 2009-10 fiscal year, city officials say.

The police union is the only city labor group to agree to negotiate with the city. If all the unions agree to concessions, $24 million will be saved from next year's deficit, city officials said.
