The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office has filed 63 criminal cases against private commercial firms, charged with embezzlement at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Itar-Tass reports. Prosecutors claim they have stripped the state budget of $14 million and did $170 million of damage to the victims of the tragedy and those who worked inside the reactor after the 1986 accident.

The new sarcophagus “Shelter 2” above the destroyed power-generating unit was supposed to be put into operation last year. But the money for its construction has been embezzled by the constructors over the past two years, Deputy Prosecutor General Tatiana Kornyakova said. Thus, “at best the sarcophagus will be built within two years.”

The sarcophagus “Shelter 1” that contains at least 200 tons of nuclear fuel from Chernobyl’s No. 4 reactor was built in the fall of 1986, several months after the catastrophe. Experts have repeatedly warned it is too old and may collapse at any time. The term of its guaranteed usage expires in 2006. <snip>
