He's done a fairly good job at NCI so far, hasn't been there all that long. He's somewhat political, but I'm guessing he wouldn't sacrifice his credibility with the research and medical community to please Bush on stem cell research.

He's also slightly "corporate" and will tend to favor helping drug companies bring treatments to market. That would be the area where he bears watching.
