It's not even smart colonization.

Folks, learn from history: the only way to have a successful and stable colony is to co-opt a pre-existing middle class who can be persuaded to support your administration as long as you promise to protect their position of privilege in their own society. That way, they do all the work that requires local knowledge, while you just sit up at the top of the pyramid and take a cut of the profits.

If you destroy and gut that potential middle layer, then you have to run everything yourself--and let's face it, you don't know how. You don't speak the language, you don't have a network of informants, you don't know when you're being lied to and you don't know any other way of dealing with things but just to blow shit up. And now we can see the results of doing it THAT way.
