In August, an appeals court in Mekka reportedly confirmed the sentence of 8,000 lashes for a woman who was convicted of abducting a child. Thousands of lashes are not uncommon sentences in Saudi Arabia.

According to press reports, lashes were generally administered with a thin reed by a man who must hold a book under his arm to prevent him from lifting the arm too high.
