For more than a year, Obama relied on conventional means to confront the blogosphere's superheated rumor mill—to little effect.

When people got their news from conventional media and conventional media evaluated the truth or likelihood of rumors before spreading them, then ignoring lies and rumors could work. But when virtually all media are components of RNCPravda and eagerly repeat lies that they know to be lies, and the blogosphere is full of extreme partisan liars who think that "true" means "favors them" or "fits their agenda," then you have to confront it. If you won't defend yourself, how can the American people expect you to defend us? This is a positive sign that Obama can be a fighter when he needs to be.
