Obama summons Boehner for budget talks

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has summoned the top Republican in Congress to the White House on Tuesday for talks aimed at averting a government shutdown this weekend as talks on a bill that would both fund federal agencies through the end of September and impose immediate spending cuts have stalled.

Boehner will meet with Mr. Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

President Obama has warned that without a deal the ensuing government shutdown would "jeopardize our economic recovery" just as jobs are finally being created.

With budget talks deadlocked, Boehner readied a week-long bill to cut spending immediately by as much as $12 billion while averting a government shutdown threatened for Friday, officials disclosed Monday night. The stop-gap measure would also provide enough money to operate the Pentagon through the end of September.
