Wealthy private interests know that herb has consciousness altering as well as medicinal properties.

They think it is bad for business because it may lead to people questioning authority as well as become less productive and therby cut their profits.

Big pharma doesn't want any type of herbal medicine that is inexpensive and readily available to supplant their expensive chemicals and seriously cut their profits. So they get their private police agencies (see US Justice Dept., US military) to make sure people are not getting the medicine they need for cheap or for free.
