Man faces hate-crime charges in SF attack (on interracial family)

Hosea Matavao, 48, faces three counts of assault, one count of endangering a child and one count of battery, said Omid Talai, spokesman for the district attorney. Four of those five charges have hate crime allegations attached to them.

A husband and wife were walking with their 3-year-old and 21-month-old sons in a double baby stroller at Eighth and Market streets at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, when Matavao allegedly made a comment about the race of their sons. The husband is white and the wife is black.

Matavao then punched the woman and her husband, who tried to defend themselves and protect their children, Talai said. While they were attempting to get away, Matavao allegedly kicked the tarp on the stroller, hitting the 3-year-old's head.
