In looking through Paul Lukiak's specualtive but fascinating analysis about the whole history of AWOL, I think this further 'disappearing' of records underscores his central thesis:

Bush was actually, for a short time, separated from service and subject to immediate call-up. He was classified a deserter, did not report for induction, and then . . . magically had his reserve status and title changed in ways that throughly condradict USAF procedure. Lukiak is obviously speculating, as he admits: there are too many gaps in Bush's record. Paul does a great job of working inductively, however, and his conclusions, if true, would be really damning.

As he says, all questions flow to and from the missing physical exam.
