CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq - Insurgents apparently have stepped up efforts to use their least risky weapon, the improvised explosive device, in the al-Anbar province near Fallujah.

"Most of the injuries we're seeing are IED attacks," said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Apple, 33, a general surgeon at Bravo Surgical Company in Camp Fallujah.

Insurgents use such ploys as hiding bombs in the carcasses of animals and placing propane tanks near the explosives to cause a fire. Insurgents usually detonate the bombs remotely with cellular phones or wireless doorbell ringers.

"They're easy to set up," said Apple. "They don't have to be anywhere near them to set it off."

Though an expected massive insurgent attack did not materialize after the handover of power on June 28, insurgent IED activity is strong.
