President Kibaki yesterday formally declared the drought ravaging the country a national disaster - and spelt out the grim future facing the starving over the next six months.

Now almost 3.3 million citizens, including 1.5 million schoolchildren, are suffering from a severe food shortage and need emergency aid, he said.

And the disaster will be even worse if the short rains fail in October and November.

Then up to 4.3 million people including 1.5 million children will need food aid for another six months, President Kibaki said.
