2004 Presidential Election

Several Democratic candidates have signed up to challenge President George W. Bush in the 2004 election. By announcing their intentions early (Howard Dean declared his candidacy in May of 2002), each of these candidates was hoping to get a head start on fundraising, a critical element in proving to the press, the public and would-be donors that their campaign is viable.

Early fundraising is particularly important this cycle because of recent campaign finance reforms that ban the national political parties from raising unlimited "soft money" contributions, which they formerly used to aid their nominee's campaign. Although soft money is prohibited, the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act doubled the limits on individual contributions to candidates. For more detail on these changes, view our chart on the new limits.

Presidential candidates: Receipts Spending Cash on Hand
George W. Bush (R) $ 35,109,600**
John Kerry (D) 16,028,266
John Edwards (D) 11,936,277
Howard Dean (D) 10,547,980
Dick Gephardt (D) 9,750,802
Joe Lieberman (D) 8,151,575
Lyndon H. Larouche Jr (D) 4,755,882
Bob Graham (D) 3,136,326
Dennis Kucinich (D) 1,718,354
