There are two reasons:

1) Flu can be accurately diagnosed with a throat swap (big q-tip), and a chemical anaylsis performed at the doctor's office. The test costs 15-25 dollars. The viral infection could also be mono.

2) THERE ARE ANTIVIRALS. There are 3-4 different antivirals that will clear up the flu after 1-4 days in most people, vs. 2-3 weeks. For them to be effective, you must SEE THE DOC WITHIN 48 HOURS of the onset of symptoms.
