as a basis for medical research.

An underlying justification for animal research as a foundation for human medicine is that because of evolution humans and other animals have remarkable similarities in physiology and anatomy.

If you don't believe in evolution there is no reason to believe that any given animal species (or the cells of these species) used in the laboratory shares meaningful similarities with human counterparts.
