Marion "Pat" Robertson was a 90-day wonder, a freshly minted United States Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant, in command of a platoon heading toward the fighting in Korea.

While still aboard the troop transport, Pat Robertson told his fellow officers his daddy, a US Senator from Virginia, was going to pull some strings and get his son's sorry arse off the ship when it pulled into Yokohama.

The other Marine officers thought he was joking, but, sure enough, when the boat pulled away for its next destination on the Korean peninsula, Pat was on the dock with his sea bag, waiving bye-bye.

Most of the men went on to get killed or wounded, including the source of the above story, Republican Congressman Pete McCloskey of California.

BTW: Pat Robertson, in Japan, became known as the Liquor Officer:
