Why all this focus on the South?

And on the Southern white male specifically? One would think there's no one living in the South except for poor white males. Poor white, misunderstood males. I keep reading about Democrats needing to win the South - by which is meant winning over these "poor" white males. If I were a Democratic candidate, I'd write off the South altogether. It's become increasingly Republican among the white population and redistricting has segregated black Democratic voters from their white Republican counterparts. The Democrats will win Birmingham, but lose Alabama. They'll win Atlanta, but lose Georgia. That's the way it'll be without a major shift in Southern white voting habits. And what about the rest of us? I'm considerably more progressive than the Southern Democrats. I'd like to be catered to as well. Why don't the rest of us count? Does anyone else feel the way I do? I don't mean to be rude, but sometimes Southern whites come off as whiney and demanding. Hello! We just had massive fires here. New York had terrorist attacks. We're all in the same economic mess and the same quagmire in Iraq. How many elections do we have to go through before the whole Confederate flag issue is buried?
