In football and basketball, you have different ways to score, and strategy/probability comes into play.

It would be less exciting for football if touchdowns were 4 points, field goals 3 (as they are), safeties 2 (as they are), and extra point kicks.

That 6 points gives some distance between the 4 it could have been given and the 6 it has. Determines strategy, mathematical odds, game-making plays, etc.

It does make sense. You just have to consider the variety of scores that can be done.

Basketball has a 3-point zone and of course, single points for foul shots for much the same reason. Very elegant when you think about it.

They all makes sense. You don't want to compare apples and tangerines.
