Did you look at the rest of his work? He has his own style, and is a hell of a draftsman. Most artists-even fantasy artists-use models or photos. I didn't in my own drawing (can't remember the post #) but since I'm a woman, I'm my own reference. Guys generally need models.

It's all a matter of taste. A lot of artists use loads of detail to compensate for poor draftsmanship, composition, color work, technique, etc. I've taught college illustration courses, and I was on the artists review board for Walt Disney Feature animation. I've weeded out hundreds of portfolios that were detail heavy but lacking in important skills.Phil passed the board and has become a very successful artist in his own right.But if you don't like his work, that's fine! Just sharing.
