CHICAGO — The 2008 Super Bowl is coming to the Valley.
NFL owners voted Thursday to award the game to Arizona. Other areas bidding for the game were Tampa, Fla., and Washington, D.C.

It will be the second Super Bowl to be played in the Valley. Super Bowl XXX was played at Sun Devil Stadium in 1996.

“It's a proud day. We should all celebrate,” said Cardinals vice president Michael Bidwill.

Arizona governor Janet Napolitano(D) pumped her fist in exultation when NFL commissoner Paul Tagliabue announced the owners' decision.

“Hosting the Super Bowl will be an opportunity for the world to see the new Arizona,” Napolitano said. “Now we have to go start getting ready.”

Tagliabue said the presentations from the three cities were “extraordinary,” but told officials from the Arizona Super Bowl Bid Committee, “You won convincingly.”
