anime can be great, can be crap, can be deep, can be silly, can be... well, there is so much anime it really covers any story genre you can imagine - and then some ;-)

obviously you are not alone - i'm shocked by some of the responses on this thread - but if you are really fussed, i am sure that you can find some anime you like - if you want to take the time to find it. there really is something for everyone (we have 3 generations of anime watchers in our fam).

i highly recommend watching subtitled anime (not dubbed) and also not looking at what is shown on kids tv as any kind of representation of real anime. adult swim has some good stuff on from time to time, but, unfortunately, it is dubbed, which can really take away from the overall quality.
