He has, according to CREW, steered defense contracts to his brother, and done other questionable earmarking stuff.

Look, I have no problem with Pelosi backing him; she's got to have known that a firestorm would be the result, so she must have plans on how to stymie it, or figure that she can ride it out. As far as who should be ML, I really don't have an opinion. I don't know how good either man is at conducting the business of ML, such as rounding up votes and making deals. I'm going to assume their fellow dem reps can figure it out.
