Musical comedy is set to Santorum's 'Teachings' [View All]

"Given my politics, to make a spoof seemed too easy and predictable," local out playwright Tom Wilson Weinberg said in a recent phone interview.

Using the Republican senator's many publicly expressed beliefs, Weinberg's AboveGround Theater has created "The Teachings of Chairman Rick," and will premiere the comedy at Sept. 14-17 as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

A hothouse of exploratory art, the Fringe "freed" Weinberg and allowed him to feel "loose and inventive," he said, to write songs for each of the three actors who portray Santorum.

Most close observers see Santorum as an upstanding, values-oriented, effective politician - or an anti-gay, sex-obsessed pope fanatic with the demeanor of a Ken doll.
