2. I hear ya, but...
....it's a start.

Quite honestly, once it's the law and some of the initial outrage from the bigot fringe settles down, they can quietly increase the scope of it without all the hurdles it took to get this passed.

The bottom line is there is just too big a portion of the populace that really would rather we just disappear forever and they get their panties in a wad everytime we take a step closer to equality. You know that if the legislature passed gay marriage and Gregoire signed it, Tim Eyman and his crew would be out the next day with petitions to invalidate the law (and they probably will try on this one as well) and there are enough idiots in our state that really believe that if we are allowed to marry, they will invoke the wrath of God and the entire Cascade range will explode and kill us all or some shit like that. Between them and the real haters in there, they'd probably win if it became a ballot initiative to repeal it.

I know it sounds pessimistic, but our state makes it so easy to put our civil rights to the popular vote that it's an uphill battle for equality.
