9. To a great extent,
Gonzo's hypocrisy and lack of knowledge about the Constitution were displayed for all to see. A couple of Senators asked why their letters to the DOJ hadn't been answered. The highlight was when Sen. Whitehouse (D-RI) grilled Gonzales on testifying, making sure that the Attorney General acknowledged that he understood that when he was under oath, he was to tell the truth and not weasel around. Gonzales acknowledged that if he were not under oath, he would have testified differently.

Another highlight was the bit about Habeas Corpus--Gonzales explaining that since the Constitution just said that HC could not be curtailed by Congress except in cases of dire emergency, the Constitution didn't acknowledge that we have the right to HC!!!! The senator asking questions at the time (I think it was Leahy--couldn't keep my full attention on it because I was listening at work and got interrupted regularly) basically told Gonzales that he is an idiot when it comes to understanding the Constitution.

One other point--apparently Gonzales delivered a nearly 200 page document to the Senate, and Leahy asked him to come back tomorrow or next week to talk about it after the Senators had time to read it. Gonzales was non-committal.

Hope this helped.
