9. I think he was a semi-willing pawn. I voted he did what he was told.
Down in Texas, Bush never looked like he enjoyed talking about running, or running. Nationally, he was most relaxed when he was trailing in the polls--every time he took a lead, he seemed more agitated and angry. Many interpreted that as him not wanting to be president.

I think Bush ran because he was supposed to, because his daddy's friends came to him and showed him how he could win, and because it was his chance to finally beat his daddy at something, or at least prove his equal. That's a defining characteristic of his life.

I don't think he really wanted to be president, and I think he knew he was unqualified and unable to handle the job. And I think he buried that insecurity once they made him president, and that extreme "confidence" and arrogance is his way of pushing all doubt from his mind. As with all bullies, all egomaniacs, it's all a sign of his insecurity, and like all other bullies, Bush has chosen this least healthy way to handle his doubts.

He should have listened to his first instinct and not run. But he had that whole Oedipal thing going, and couldn't refuse it.
