Enterprise-Record
updated 7:59 p.m. CT, Sat., March. 14, 2009

By Sunday, about 332 teachers in Butte County will have received notice they might not have a job when the 2009-10 school year begins in August or September.

Twenty-seven teachers in Glenn County are also getting pink slips by March 15, the legal deadline to notify teachers they could be laid off.

Another 89 "temporary" teachers, hired for the current school year, are also being notified they won't have jobs in the fall, and about a dozen more are being told their hours will be reduced.

The numbers, derived from a survey by the Enterprise-Record of the districts in the two counties, are not exact, as different districts have different ways of reporting how many teachers are being let go.

In addition, "certificated" employees include counselors and administrators as well as teachers.

The actual number that will be laid off will be lower, as the districts are still analyzing the state budget's impact on their funding, and refining spending plans for the next school year.
