1. Austerity is definitely needed
But it should be applied at the top, so that it can trickle down. When Wall Street bankers go to one of their power lunches, they will still be paying $200 each, but austerity means that the kitchen will serve them something from the dollar menu and the rest of the check will go to pay down the deficit. When they get done at the end of the day, they will be taking the subway home, because their Maserati in the garage has been auctioned off to pay for a neighborhood health clinic. When they get home, they will have to make do with one bedroom at their McMansion, because when there is austerity, folks have to double up, you know. They will be sharing their McMansion with three homeless families (like the scene in 'Dr. Zhivago').
