The false "history": the Puritans were hungry and the natives brought them food which both groups shared.
The meaning (YMMV): giving thanks that we live in a bountiful land, that we have food, that we have friends and relatives to share the holiday with, and that we live in AMERICA.
I see nothing wrong with celebrating the meaning, whatever you take it to be.
