An old way of thinking, that totally misinterpreted what the original message was. What was a progressive style of thought was used in a non-progressive way until a progressive came along and showed how wrong it was.

Kind of like today - where people interpret what the word 'god' means without really thinking about it (ie, can god make a rock so big even he cannot lift it, etc).

Some today try to mix the OT and NT and make laws around that, because they are too lazy to analyze what they are saying. Kind of like the aliens as you noted. People sat down and read 'the book' and saw issues in it - as we do with the bible today. Without really getting the 'aliens' and what they wanted all along.
