for instance my mom asked me to watch for a certified mail for a gift check (at that time you could give someone a gift of $10K in a year without paying a gift tax and an older relative wished to do so -- now it's 12K )-- yay, i call that fairly good news!

i'm trying to think of any time when an unknown certified letter was good news, i probably can't off the top, but i'm sure as soon as i log off, i will

very often a certified letter could be someone sending a nice gift (large check or gift card) -- they just want to be sure you get it safely

it's going toward christmas, i'm going to think positive and assume it's a gift, keeping my fingers crossed for you

when you go to pick it up, can you ask for the return address and then refuse to accept it if there is no return address? i thought since anthrax you couldn't send stuff w.out a return address, the info should be out there, shouldn't it!?

good luck, i'm quite optimistic really, i think it's just an error or haste that the letter carrier didn't note down the sender
