KAtrina, and later Rita, were coming our way: Rita was really powerful also, and they thought it was coming through the middle of the Texas Gulf Coast, right at us. So the authorities ordered an evacuation. But we didn't have anywhere to evacuate to. I called as far north as Oklahoma (500-600 miles away), and couldn't a get a hotel room reserved even if we made it up there. I tried to evacuate south, but the hotels down south were throwing people out.

Furthermore, as typical for evacuations, traffic gets stalled out. My oldest is autistic, and at that time, sitting almost motionless in a vehicle for hours would have set him off, even violently. So we stayed home. We loaded up with food, batteries, water, and I got all the clothes cleaned up, cars gassed, and cell phones charged. There was probably about 10% of the city that didn't leave. We ended up not getting a drop of rain. The city was really quiet for several days!
