The media's fascination with Trump (his polling demonstrates name recognition and little more at this point in the race) kept the birth certificate crap in the news.

When polls start coming out that larger and larger percentages of people are starting to doubt his legitimacy that has to be nipped.

Think of how repeating Iraq and AQ over and over again in the news convinced a sizable portion of the country that Saddam had something to do with 9/11.

The president can't throw away votes letting Trump keep up his bullshit.
