There is a difference between a liberal and a conservative. An old joke I’ve told many times is “Funny how the broad mind and narrow waist of youth changes places as we grow old”. A Liberal is most inclined to learn and therefore compromise their values as they encounter challenges. A conservative feels, they have learned all they need to and compromise is subjecting their core values to attack.
A liberal is most likely to offer a compromise up front where with a conservative it’s a last resort. Our most recent budget negotiations are a great example. President Obama offered a compromise up front and the conservatives took it as a sign of weakness and demanded more.
I am a conservative with many liberal views. Much of what is posted on both liberal and conservative forums is repugnant to me. The mixing of social conservative values and budget considerations is outrageous. The status quo is repugnant to me. The premise that people can be set aside, so that we can maintain the increase of riches to the rich, sucks. The premise that our empire and warfare is important to our welfare sucks. The premise that we can spend unlimited funds to prosperity is stupid. The premise that central government is the best of solutions is unacceptable to me.
Problem is, the Conservatives have mounted a campaign that labels Liberals as stupid and the cause of the economic problems with this country. They have, to date, succeeded with many in this labeling. In addition, the Republicans have sold a lie that reducing taxes will increase jobs. Not so, it increases riches for the rich.
The 500 or so currently in charge aren’t too impressed with the cries from the voters. We don’t donate enough funds to their re-election campaigns. Corporations, banks, unions and rich donors have undue influence on what gets enacted. Is it time to hit the streets? Do we need to shut down this country to re-educate them on who the people are, who is important?
Many on this forum won’t agree with what I’ve said and I can accept that. Can you accept that this country isn’t black and white. It is multi shades of gray and every decision has its ramifications?
