Man attempts to hijack Alitalia Paris-Rome flight
Source: BBC

A man has been overpowered by cabin crew on an Alitalia flight from Paris to Rome, after he drew out a small knife and demanded the plane divert to the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

A female flight attendant was slightly injured as the man was subdued.

The suspect, from Kazakhstan, was handed over to police and arrested after flight AZ329 landed at Rome's Fiumicino airport at 2005 GMT.

He was "clearly agitated", according to a statement from Alitalia.

2. I like Alitalia. Their flight attendants don't take no sh*t.
Neither does Air France or Iberia. They are tough folks. Enforcers!

Love 'em and obey 'em. They can get you off a flight faster than you can imagine. And don't even THINK about suing them! They have some broad powers to enforce a lot of stuff...I speak from experience...

10. They have had lots of experience
Back in the 70s it seemed like there was a hijacking/bombing/shooting at the Roma/Fiumicino Airport every week...

14. It sure shows. I've seen a fair amount of seriously armed soldiers
around Rome, and also Madrid and most recently Paris (around the Eiffel Tower). Of course Madrid had its own experience with the bombing of its railroad station (and who knows what the Basque separatists are up to). The guys in camo with big guns kind of surprised me but my guess is that they follow what the NYPD anti-terrorism guys do, e.g., pick a different landmark every day for special attention just in case anybody has any ideas about leaving their mark on a famous site, like the Statue of Liberty...

Alitalia hijacking attempt fails

Cabin crew overpowers a knife-wielding man who demanded that a Paris-Rome flight be diverted to Libya's capital Tripoli.
Last Modified: 24 Apr 2011 23:15

A man who tried to hijack a Paris-Rome flight and take it to Libya was overpowered by cabin crew during the flight and arrested when the plane arrived in the Italian capital, officials said.

Italian media reported that the attempted hijacking on Sunday was carried out by Valeriy Tolmachev, a 48-year-old adviser to the Kazakh delegation at the Paris-based UN cultural organisation, UNESCO.

A statement from Alitalia airlines said the suspect had assaulted a flight attendant "and asked that the plane be taken to Tripoli."

Other attendants on flight AZ329 then overpowered the suspect, who was "clearly agitated." A doctor on board the flight then sedated Tolmachev, and the captain radioed police, who arrested him when the plane landed, the statement said.

7. As long as it's in 100mL or less plastic bottles...
...that fit in a one-quart ziplock bag.

And for GOD'S SAKE, no needles.

Another point: the drugs better have a prescription label! Some days I wish I were dumbed down....then I wouldn't be suffering all the abounding ignorance and stupidity.

13. Note to self: Don't try to use a nail file
to defeat an airplane's crew.

Not much of a weapon, apparently.
